At Macquarie students are expected to wear their school uniform with pride and to follow conventional standards of appearance in accordance with the School’s guidelines and the expectations of the School community.

There are a number of very good reasons for students to wear a uniform to school. Some of these reasons are:

  • Uniforms give students a sense of belonging to a particular school and create an identity for the school in the community. Hence they promote unity, pride and a sense of community spirit.
  • A school uniform, worn as is intended, teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. The wearing of uniforms may help students to participate better in a workforce where professionalism and adherence to policies is required.
  • A school uniform can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically.
  • A uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it's hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when you're dressed exactly the same.
  • Uniform policies save valuable class time because they are easier to enforce than a standard dress code.
  • Uniforms can improve punctuality – it is easier and faster to get dressed if you know what you are going to wear!
  • Uniforms improve student safety by making monitoring on excursions easier, making identification of those who should not be in the school grounds easier, and studies have shown that when schools introduced uniforms in the USA crime rates at those schools decreased.

All students of Macquarie, both past and present, have the right to benefit from the good name of our school. It is for the above reasons that Macquarie teachers strictly enforce our school’s uniform policy.
