Stage 3 Challenges

Stage 3 Challenges

By Admin on 13 December 2018

The study of simple machines; and how they work is a part of our Stage 3 NSW Science Curriculum. To bring together and celebrate Stage 3’s study of simple machines, each class will create a new machine whose job will be to complete an everyday task.

The key to their new machines is that it has to be "Rube Goldberg" like in design. That is, they need to see how many different simple machines they can use to complete a simple everyday task.

Each class will be broken into pairs who will create a moving part that becomes a part of the whole classes’ machine! Your child will be looking for bits and pieces at home to make into their section. They are to re-purpose ‘found objects’, not go out and buy new items J

Who is Rube Goldberg: He is best-known for his "Inventions" cartoons, which use a string of outlandish tools, people, plants, and steps to accomplish everyday simple tasks in the most complicated way. Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Rube Goldberg's drawings point out that people are often overwhelmed by over complicating their lives.
