Orange Regional Futsal Championships

Orange Regional Futsal Championships

27 June 2017

The Senior School lunchtime Futsal House Competition of Term 1 was a huge success. As a result, teams to represent Macquarie Anglican Grammar School at the Regional Futsal Championships were selected. They trained for most of this term in the lead up to the championships held on Thursday 15 June at the Orange PCYC.

The teams selected were in the following age divisions: Stage 3 Boys, 14’s Girls, 14’s Boys, 16’s Boys (2 teams) and 19’s Boys.

The 14’s Girls played their first competitive matches against Cowra High School and grew in confidence and skill throughout the day. They are very keen to keep playing and return to this competition next year!

The 14’s Boys were very competitive, also improving throughout the day. Drawn against the 1st place team in the semi final, they held Cowra to a 0-0 draw after both regular and ‘sudden-death’ extra times, however, lost in a tight penalty shootout. This was a real credit to how much their skills and play developed throughout the day.

In the 16’s Boys Macquarie entered two teams: a team of Year 9 students who were gaining valuable experience learning what Futsal at this level is all about and a second team of Year 10 Boys. The Year 9 Boys competed against Year 10 teams from Mudgee, Cowra and Mamre Anglican and were competitive, but unfortunately not successful. They are now very keen to return next year!

The Year 10 Boys competed against teams from Lithgow, Cowra and Dubbo South. A narrow loss to South Campus (2-3) and solid victories against Lithgow (0-7) and Cowra (0-9) saw the team finish second in Pool A and qualify for the semi final against the first placed Pool B team from Mamre Anglican School. The Year 10 boys who improved their tactical play throughout the day, were ready for the Semi-Final, and took an early lead. When they extended the lead, MAS threw everything at Macquarie to try to claw back the deficit, playing with a ‘fly goalkeeper’ to press a numbers advantage but to no avail. Macquarie finished with a 4-2 victory qualifying them for the final and a place at the State Championships. The Grand Final saw a rematch against Dubbo South Campus in which the Year 10 Boys were able to reverse the result and win the day with a 3-2 victory!

The Macquarie 19 Boys team consisted of only Year 11 students. Like the Year 9 team they were playing against teams predominantly older than themselbes. They gained lots of experience in a large competition and played against teams from Cowra (W 5-2), Mudgee (L 1-10), Kelso (L 0-12), Wellington (W 8-2), Dubbo Snr(B) (L 1-7) and Dubbo Snr(R) (W 4-3). Unfortunately, the three wins were not enough to qualify for the semi finals. Nevertheless, they improved throughout the day against teams who were older and more experienced and their final victory was against the eventual winners of the day. They have given themselves a hunger and desire to return next year and do even better.

Unfortunately, there was not enough competition to run a Stage 3 competition and these boys were unable to compete.

Congratulations to all the players who represented the school so well on the day. All the best to the Year 10 boys as they prepare to travel to State Championships in Penrith early next term!
