Coast to Country Cup - Boys U14 Rugby

By Admin on 1 September 2017

What better way to finish winter than with a day of rugby against the region's best in Dubbo. This is exactly what our under 14 boys rugby squad consisting of 18 Macquarie and 4 Orange Anglican boys did on Thursday 31 August. The NSW Rugby Coast to Country Cup at Victoria Park presented an exciting and challenging opportunity for rugby players in the Western Region to compete against schools from all sectors, with the winners progressing through to the state finals.

The U14 draw consisted of 5 teams: Coonamble High, James Sheahan Catholic High (Orange), St Johns College, Red Bend Catholic College (Forbes) and Macquarie. With some solid training sessions under our belts and great weather for football the boys were very keen to take the field for their first hit out against Red Bend. It was a tight tussle with the Macquarie boys trading blows and winning the exchanges around the ruck. Some speed out wide saw the Red Bend boys eventually cross the line to take the win in Game 1.

Game 2 saw us come up against the Coonamble outfit. With a few tackles under their belts, the boys made another promising start meeting their opponents on the defensive line and taking the ball forward strongly. Some simple errors led to a few quick tries for the opposition and despite some great fight back the Macquarie crew couldn’t quite find the equalisers.

Game 3 was set to be a tough hit out against a very strong James Sheahan outfit. The lineout began to click for our boys with some great jumping and support play incorporating our Orange Anglican teammates. Defence was the difference in the game with some strong ball running out wide leading to the win for James Sheahan.

The last hit out for the day was against St Johns College in a local derby. After a day full of rugby the boys were starting to put together some fantastic phases of football displaying great support play and drive. The boys put in a valiant effort and the game was called off early due to an injury to one of our players.

The boys gathered together after the match and reflected on some of the highlights and learning experiences throughout the day. They represented the school proudly and gelled as a group including their Orange Anglican mates in every way possible. Although the win escaped them they all played great rugby throughout the day and showed great promise for future events.
