Over the next 2 weeks, a number of other staff and I are heading to the towns of Bourke, Walgett and Broken Hill to complete our exploration of the possibility of developing a boarding community at Macquarie. We are currently developing a business case to see if the information we have gathered enables us to develop an educationally and financially sound model; and can provide the young people of the central west who can’t attend as day students with the care that is appropriate.

At Macquarie, we have four key words that form the centre of what we are trying to achieve. These words are Faith, Community, Character and Excellence.

This week’s House Assembly was run by Dunlop. Dunlop is named after Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop. Sir Edward is an outstanding example of the concept of community. During World War II, he was in charge of the No.1 Allied General Hospital in Java when Java fell. He became a prisoner of war.

As I write this opening article for Term 4, our students are undertaking one of their Higher School Certificate (HSC) English exams. This is a challenging time. The HSC is designed to be challenging, for students to have to work hard over a sustained period to achieve well. This in itself is a good thing. Sustained hard work is important for all of us. At Macquarie we support this sustained hard work with excellent teaching and great pastoral care.

Today’s (13 September) Sydney Morning Herald online includes an article entitled “Why I won’t punish my daughter”. It goes on to outline that feeling “bad” about yourself is not good for you. The author did not claim to be a psychologist or an educational expert. They were speaking from personal experience and acting in response to that.

Yet as I read further and further into the article the more concerned I became about the central premise of the article: “We need to never tell our children they have done something wrong; we should only talk about the good things they do and we should never punish.”

“But you can’t win because there is no finish line” – Girl 2

These quotes are taken from a discussion in the documentary “Screenagers” which screened on Monday night at Reading Cinemas. It was a fitting explanation of many of the issues that significant screen time can cause. This is not a film review, however I would suggest that if you are able to see it you probably should.
