Supporting our young people to be successful, resilient contributors

We sometimes forget how lucky we are to live in a place as magical as Australia, and more specifically our wonderful town, Dubbo. Our school, work and sporting commitments as well as advances in technology are slowly changing our perspective on what is important in life.

In a speech to 225 Arts and Science graduands, their families, partners and friends at UWA, Tim Minchin (a UWA Graduate and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his contribution to the arts) delivered an outstanding address sharing 9 life lessons. The first two of the lessons Tim spoke of really struck a chord with me and made me think about how we can support our young people to be successful, resilient contributors in a rapidly changing world.

Do you think you could sit HSC tests?

This is a great question that has been floated in the media as the 2017 HSC cohort sit the first of their exams. When we think about it as adults and look back at our own educational journeys, it can be hard to remember the pressure of exams or the relief we felt at the end of our final school year.

A recent study by UNSW School of Education confirmed that the HSC exams are a major source of stress for adolescents.

From the Deputy Headmaster: Term 3 Week 2

Last week during assembly I spoke with students about goal-setting for Term 3 and, in particular, how their reports could act as a springboard for this. I asked for a show of hands in answer to the question “who was happy with their report?” Of those students who did not raise their hands, some were unhappy with results and others would have liked to have been selected for more levels in co-curricular activities, for example swimming.

Sometimes our precious things lose their shine because of use or oxidisation or just from accumulated dust.
